Tonight's investigation of The Mill Inn, Hartlepool with the Hartlepool Paranormal Investigators began at 21:00. However, the Hartlepool Paranormal investigators were on site earlier in order to set up their equipment and trigger objects.
Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to conduct my building and rooms survey or to do my base line EMF and temperature readings.
There were around 22 people to help with the investigation, for most of the people present this was to be their first investigation of a haunted location.
We gathered in the bar area where we were split into two groups, the group I was with wanted to know a little of the history of the Inn, while the second group went in without any knowledge about the inn.
The Mill House Inn is believed to have been the living accommodation to the old windmill that formerly stood over the road, around 100 meters to the north west of the inns current location. In 1435 a farm stood at the location of the Mill Inn. It is thought that the cellar or the Mill Inn was once much bigger than it is now and may have extended out towards the windmill. In 1873 the building was turned into a pub and purchased by the Cameron brewery in 1893. The Mill Inn is thought to have sustained some damage during 1914 (world war I) and a few houses in the local area were destroyed. In its time the Mill Inn has been the place of birth to many people and witnessed many celebrations and parties.
Our groups investigation began in the basement area 1, the participants began with some table tilting. They seemed to have some results from this with the table tipping and moving quite frantically at times. During this I was recording using night vision and also scanning the area with the EMF meter. I was getting some intermittent readings on the EMF meter and while watching the video noticed some light anomalies, one of which was at the same time as one of the participants reported feeling cold and also tripping one of the meters. I am very skeptical about all things séance related and find evidence such as table tipping very un-reliable. I would have preferred them to use a table with much broader legs, the table being used had a much wider top than the base and legs, making the table inherently unstable and much easier to move either consciously or subconsciously. Some of the group reported feeling cold or a cold breeze in this area, I did note that the fully operational beer cellar had cooling equipment with fans for its beer and drinks, this may account for these feelings.
We moved into the basement area 2, where members of the group formed and joined hands in a circle around a participant. The medium then began asking the spirits or ghosts to push the participant in the circle either forward or backwards in order to answer yes or no to questions. Again, it seemed there was some success with this experiment, the participant did indeed fall forward or back in response to these questions. Again, I am very skeptical about this type of experiment and has very little value in proving the existence of paranormal phenomena, and could be subject to falsification either voluntary or involuntary.
We then moved back into area 1 of the basement where another short session of table tilting was again tried with seemingly some success. An airwave scanner that is used for searching for ghostly voices through the air waves was then placed on the table and questions were asked through the white noise in the hope that a ghostly voice would answer back. The group didn't seem to have any success with this and gave up after about 10 minutes, I am not comfortable with any equipment which uses and scans on radio waves as they are liable to interference from many sources.
After a short refreshment break our group went up to the living room on the first floor where they would then try to use a Ouija board. The medium abandoned attempt 1 because the planchette moved to each corner in turn and he said this was a sign of an evil or negative energy present in the room. After a bit of persuading the group then tried to use the Ouija board again. As is usual with Ouija boards the planchette moved but little or no useful evidence was gained. I have been experimenting with and making high end Ouija boards for over 30 years but rarely if ever have I had any useful information which can be checked and confirmed. The group were seemingly having a conversation with some unknown spiritual being but as always due to the lack of information I remain skeptical.
After a while and a chat with a former resident of the Inn, the group decided to carry on their Ouija board séance in bedroom 2. While they did this, I went alone to bedroom 3 to carry out a lone investigation, this is where it gets interesting.
I sat on the floor in in back corner or the room facing the door, I accidentally knocked the trigger objects which were placed on a box in the room and so placed my EMF meter on there instead. I began recording with my night vision and every once in a while, my EMF would bleep and the red light would flash. The screen on my night vision camera is not very big and I didn't see anything such as light anomalies or apparitions. After about 10 minutes in the room the EMF meter fell silent and was not to sound again for the remaining 30 or so minutes I was in the room. I even got up and checked the EMF meter at one point, wondering it had switched off, but it was still on.
When I checked the video, during the first 10 minutes I recorded a few very faint light anomalies, However, the very last time the EMF recorder can be seen and hear bleeping coincided with a light anomaly flying near to it and at the very same time when the video/audio is slowed down to 1/3. The audible sound is very similar to the sound you would get if playing a game of air hockey, (that game where a disc floats on a bed of air and you hit it with paddles trying to score a goal against your opponent). I slowed the whole recording of that room down to 1/3 speed and the only time that noise of clicks and pops can be heard is at the same time as the light anomaly and the EMF meter registers activity. I think when all of this is put together, while no checkable detail is available this still points toward something paranormal happening in my opinion. Check out the video for yourself.
The some of the group in bedroom 2 later moved back to the living room area where they again experimented with table tipping, while I continued recording it to video, again I recorded a few faint light anomalies, which seem to appear at critical points.
Going only on the evidence I captured on video, EMF and audio I would say further investigation should be done, but not with a group! Lone investigations a room at a time to see if any further evidence can be captured. Maybe a small séance, a medium who can give facts and other psychic devices could be used to test facts. I tried googling the Mill House Inn and found virtually nothing of interest, so if through a psychic, corroboration of checkable evidence could be found, then maybe this sceptic could be swayed…if just a little.
