The Ancient Ram Inn
Ancient Ram Inn
The Ancient Ram Inn is located in the village of Wooten-under-edge in Gloucestershire. It stands on the main road through the village, though no longer an Inn, the owner when I investigated it would let people in by appointment, (I don't know if this is still true). The inn is reputed to be the 'most haunted' (Ex) Inn in Britain. It is claimed to have more than a dozen ghosts and various other paranormal phenomena such as orbs of glowing light and various unexplainable noises and objects which move on their own.

From the outside the building looks old and slightly creepy, being sunk down from the main road. It has been altered several times over its history, this is obvious in its architecture. The original front entrance was down some steps straight from the main road. But the rear entrance is the preferred way in by the owner John, who claims it was one of the stop off points for the pilgrim fathers, on their way to the Mayflower moored at Plymouth, though in my limited research found no evidence of this, (his does not mean his statement is incorrect though).
You must enter the property through the back entrance, as soon as I entered the property I felt something on my psychic radar, I'm not sure if it was ghostly or more the atmosphere within the inn. A stale, damp musty type smell like that of old books hit the nose as you walk in the door. The inn is decorated like an old antique shop, with older furniture and curios at every turn. As you walk into the Inn it feels as though you are stepping back in time by around 150 years or so.

My investigations of The Ancient Ram Inn were conducted around 1995, I went to the inn on two occasions, the first time I photographed what can only be explained as an anomaly similar to that of a ghost. Back then digital cameras were very expensive and the image quality was not great. I was still using an Olympus 35mm for most of my work. After getting the image of the ghost like figure, developed, my first reaction was to check the photographs and negatives for anything which could have caused a double exposure. In that roll of film there were no other humans photographed, there were just pictures of empty rooms and furniture. I then checked my notes to see if I had noted any reflective objects such as mirrors or high gloss surfaces which could have caused a haze reflection from the flash, but there was nothing noted. The only strange thing was that I had made a note in my paperwork was of a feeling that had just come over me which is why I took the photograph.

Back in the mid 1990's equipment such EMF meters and night vision equipment was prohibitively expensive for most people, including myself. So most of us investigators used old school equipment like thermometers, tape measures and notes.

In one of the rooms down stairs, it would have been the lounge bar, I felt a strange presence, (I am quite sensitive to this sort of phenomena). It is claimed that this room is haunted by the ghost called the grey lady, because of the way she is dressed. I suppose this would be the traditional image of a female ghost that most people imagine. This would be similar to the unexplainable image of an apparition which is shown in my photograph, however the photograph was taken in a different room. Orbs and lights have also been seen in this area, but while I was there I never witnessed anything like this.

Upstairs one of the bedrooms, known as the Cavaliers room, is said to be haunted by a cavalier, a shepherd and dog, an incubus and succubus. I recorded strange temperature fluctuations in this room but saw no ghosts or other paranormal phenomena. On my second visit to the inn, in this room, I found strange tapping noises running through my video tape which was left recording in this room. The noise was loud, almost like someone tapping on the microphone area of the camcorder with a pen. The camera was locked off in the best position to cover as much of the room as possible, facing the only door into the room. The door was closed and measures were taken to ensure the room couldn't be entered without me knowing about it or being recorded on the camcorder. I have no explanation for this and neither before or after have I have had this noise happen on this camera.

Another upstairs bedroom is called the green room, it is said to be haunted by the ghost of a Witch like lady, this is the room where the ghost like anomaly in the photo was taken. The photograph shown is just a scanned image of the actual photograph, I have moved several times since then and temporarily misplaced the original negative which I could scan and get a better copy.
Through both of the investigations, I witness no other phenomena or anything else which could even be thought of as curious. But I am still left curious as to what caused the image on the photograph and the tapping noise on the camcorder.
As a slight foot note to the last sentence, on my second visit I took my trusty 35mm Olympus film camera (before the time of digital cameras). I had 2 rolls of 36 frame colour film and 1 roll of Black and white. None of the films/photographs taken came out. All three rolls were either faulty pre-exposed or for some reason there was a camera failure which had never happened before or after or all three rolls of film were damaged at the processors.
Unfortunately, I live so far away from the inn, that it has not been possible to go back and study it further. Looking on line it does appear that strange and unexplained things still happen at the Ancient Ram Inn and I would love the opportunity to go back for a longer period of time to study it further. If John or his daughter ever read this, then please get in contact.
This scanned from photograph image is of very poor quality, but shows the ghostly anomaly to the right. Hopefully I can find the negative so at some point I can upload a better copy.
